What did you get for Christmas? Covid

Christmas in South Carolina 2023, What did you get for Christmas? Covid

We decided to stay close to home for Christmas. Living on Lake Wylie during the holidays is calm and quiet. The weather was even cooperating, a balmy 65 and sunny the day before Christmas.

My youngest daughter, Mary, came down from Brooklyn, New York. She was going to stop at her friend in Virginia so the drive would not be so arduous. We agreed with her but then we received a phone call that the plans were cancelled because her friend and her husband got Covid. With those plans canceled she drove down with her dog a day earlier.

Mary, my oldest daughter Michelle, and my son Chris, went out to have a sibling night out. We found out that Michelle and her entire family came but my husband and I were not invited. I am still a little bitter about that.

My son and his girlfriend spent time with her family for Thanksgiving.  They came to our house for the day before Christmas, Christmas, and the day after Christmas. We enjoyed their company immensely. It was fun to have a full house. We, as a group, decided to cook different parts of the meal so we all could have fun and not feel totally obligated to cook and clean.

It was somewhere in the mix that my husband and I started to get tired. I thought that maybe I had partied too much. It was Christmas and that was to be expected. Ed and I sat on the sofa and fell asleep. It was a pleasant night. We were all relaxed.

The next day my husband said that he thought he might have contracted a cold. Stress, and the hustle and bustle of the holiday was taking its toll on our bodies. He had a sore throat, and we knew that it was possible to get sick. They said on the news that Covid, the flu, and RSV were going around our area. We had already taken all the precautions. We got our boosters, and flu shots early in the season, and washed our hands zealously after any excursion.

Two days later when my son was going to Hannah’s, his girlfriend’s parents’ house, we had to call and tell them that we took a Covid test, and it was negative. We got two more tests when we went to the grocery store, came home, and took the test again and it was positive. We informed all the kids and told them to take the test to be certain.

The only person who did not get Covid was Hannah. I am glad that she was spared this horrible feeling. It has been eight days since we took the test and am thankful that we are all getting better. It felt like the worst cold/flu I had ever had.

I received many wonderful presents for Christmas, and we had a great time. I am glad that we all got together. The new year has brought us a new understanding of how others felt getting this illness. This was the first time my husband and I contracted COVID, and I hope it is the last.
